The Putting Problem Nobody Talks About

Why Serious Golfers Stay Stuck on the Greens — And What Actually Changes It

You're not a bad putter. You've just never been given the right system. Here's what the world's best putters actually do — and why anyone can learn it.

01

The Most Frustrating Place to Be in Golf

You know the feeling. You've hit a great drive. Your approach is on the green. You're walking up thinking this could be the hole — and then you three-putt. Again.

Or you stand over a six-footer to save par. You've made this putt a hundred times in practice. But under pressure, something tightens. The stroke feels different. It lips out. You tap in, try to forget it, and carry that feeling into the next hole.

This is the part of golf that doesn't get talked about honestly. Because unlike a wayward drive or a chunked iron — which happen fast and feel random — a missed putt lingers. You stood over it. You had time to think. And you still missed. That's a specific kind of frustration that gets into your head.

And here's what makes it worse: you're good at golf. Tee to green, you're solid. You hit more fairways than most people in your group. Your iron play is improving. But the scorecard doesn't reflect it — because by the time you get to the green, you're giving strokes back.

⚠ The Hidden Problem

Putting accounts for roughly 40% of all shots in a round of golf — yet most golfers spend less than 10% of their practice time on it. And the small amount of time they do spend? Almost none of it is structured. It's just rolling putts and hoping it feels better on the day.

I've spent over 20 years as a putting coach — working with Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Fitzpatrick, and dozens of other tour professionals. And in all that time, the single thing I see most consistently — in tour pros and 18-handicappers alike — is the same thing.

Not a broken stroke. A broken system.

The golfers who stay stuck aren't lacking talent or effort. They're practising the wrong things. They're measuring nothing. And they're repeating the same errors, round after round, without understanding what's actually causing them.

02

The Truth That Changes Everything

Before I tell you what the solution is, I need to challenge something you probably believe — because it's the belief that stops more golfers from improving than almost anything else.

The idea that great putting is a gift. That some people have the touch and others don't. That there's a ceiling on what you can achieve and you've already found yours.

It's completely wrong. And I can prove it.

Think about what separates tour ball strikers from amateur golfers — distance, consistency of contact, the physical ability to generate and control speed through impact. These things require years of conditioning and very specific biomechanics. A 55-year-old club golfer will never drive it 320 yards, no matter how hard they work.

Putting is an entirely different skill. The physical demands are minimal. The distance is short. The movement is controlled. What separates elite putters from poor ones isn't athleticism — it's knowledge, precision, and process. Those things are completely learnable. At any age. Any handicap. Any level.

Anyone can learn to putt like a tour pro. The ceiling you think you've hit simply isn't there — it was just never explained to you correctly.

— Phil Kenyon

I've worked with 55-year-olds who transformed their putting in 12 weeks. Beginners who eliminated three-putts within a month. Single-figure golfers who broke through a plateau they'd been stuck at for years. When the right system is applied to the right problems — the improvement is not just possible. It's predictable.

The 3 Skills All Great Putters Master

After two decades of research and coaching at the highest level, I've identified the three skills that determine whether someone becomes a genuinely great putter — or stays stuck. Miss any one of them, and the others can't save you.

Skill 01
Start Line Control

One degree of face angle error from ten feet means a miss — every time. Most golfers have never tested their start line. They have no idea if their face is consistently open, closed, or unpredictable at impact. Without knowing, nothing else can be fixed.

Skill 02
Speed Control

Good pace makes the hole bigger. Poor pace makes it smaller. Three-putts are almost never caused by misreading the line — they're speed errors. Elite players measure pace every session. Most amateurs never measure it at all.

Skill 03
Green Reading

Research consistently shows amateurs under-read break — they don't give putts enough borrow. This isn't a feel problem. It's a perception problem. And perception can be trained and corrected once you understand your own bias.

The critical insight is how these three interact. A start line error combined with a speed error compounds. A read bias that's consistent and measurable is far easier to correct than one that varies randomly. My system addresses all three simultaneously — with diagnostics that identify which area is costing you the most strokes, and a training plan that targets your specific faults first.

What Happens When the Best in the World Apply This System

I want to show you what this looks like in practice at the highest level — not to impress you, but because these results demonstrate something important: when root causes are identified and fixed precisely, the improvement is dramatic and fast.

Scottie Scheffler · World No. 1
162nd to 22nd in Strokes Gained: Putting

The best ball striker since Tiger — but putting was costing him majors. We rebuilt his setup, corrected his aim, addressed his stroke tendencies at impact. He went on to win three of the next eight majors.

Ranked 162 → No. 22
Tommy Fleetwood · FedEx Cup Champion
188th in the world to FedEx Cup champion & World No. 3

Fleetwood was systematically over-trusting his instinctive reads — his perception was biased and he had no idea. We introduced a structured green reading system and a feedback loop. The transformation was immediate.

Ranked 188 → World No. 3
Justin Rose · World No. 1
122nd in putting to World No. 1 golfer on the planet

A subtle wrist movement from his full swing was opening his putterface — he'd been missing right for years without understanding why. One grip change fixed the root cause. He ranked 17th and 21st in Strokes Gained: Putting the following two seasons.

Ranked 122 → World No. 1

Golf Digest recently named me the coach with more players in the Masters field than any other — by a significant margin. When this many elite players trust the same system, there's a reason. And it's the same reason it works for golfers at every level.

Same diagnostic thinking. Your game.

What Happens When Golfers Like You Apply It

The tour results are compelling. But I understand the question — what about someone at my level? Here's what Academy members have experienced.

"Before the academy I feared short putts. My handicap has gone from 6 to 2. I no longer fear putts — I'm excited for them. The academy has completely changed how I think about putting."

K
Kyle P. Handicap: 6 → 2

"My goal was to get to 12 handicap. Once I started holing more putts I chased single figures instead. I'd back myself to 2-putt every green now. The Academy has all the answers."

T
Tim D. Handicap: 15 → 7.8

"My handicap lowered by 1.5 shots in just 3 weeks. I understand my biases now and what I need to do to correct them. I definitely hole more putts."

D
Deborah C. 1.5 shots saved in 3 weeks

"I thought hard before committing financially. But I knew Phil would deliver. The personalised approach to fixing your specific faults is unlike anything else available."
